As
is the case with many facial characteristics, the
size and shape of one's ears is most often a family
trait. Children with protruding ears, for example,
will often see that same characteristic in their parents'
and grandparents' ears. Surgical correction of this
deformity can be performed with great success as early
as the fourth year. By such time, the ear has reached
almost adult size, so there will be little subsequent
change.
The
plastic surgeon performs this procedure by repositioning
flexible cartilage structures. Although there are
several variations of deformity in the case of protruding
ears, the surgical objectives remain consistent-that
is to provide a normal configuration of the ear. the
surgeon places his incision behind the ear where surface
scars will be least visible.
Because
of its reconstructie nature, this procedure usually
is covered by insurance.
