Whenever
a cut is made in the skin either intentionally (during
a surgical procedure) or as the result of traauma,
a scar will result. And, although a scar can never
be eliminated, its appearance can be improved through
a plastic surgical procedure called a scar revision.
Cosmetic improvements in scar revision may include
a narrowing of the scar, a change in its direction
to conform to normal skin lines or a blending of the
scar with surrounding skin by dermabrasion
(a sanding of the skin). The plastic surgeon can evaluate
a particular scar which may be troublesome to the
patient and discuss which surgical alternatives would
best suit the scarred area in question. Usually, scar
revision is performed under local anesthesia on an
outpatient bases.
Because
this operation is considered reconstructive in nature,
it is usually covered by insurance. However, this
should be verified with yor insurance carrier.
